[homeschoolhub] Soccer Passing Mon. 8/5/13 3-5 p.m.

Another great game last week. More people were playing their positions and making themselves available to receive passes.

This week, let's think about passing to score a goal. Some of our faster runners enjoy taking the ball down the left or right side for the field and then turning toward the goal at the last minute. When you do this, you are running toward the goal at an extreme angle. The goal, which should be about 8 feet wide in our games, effectively shrinks. Depending upon the angle, your target might effectively be only 2 or 3 feet wide. It's easy for a goalie or defender to block your shot.

Here's the trick: When you get close to the goal, just make a quick, short pass to a teammate who is almost directly in front of the goal. For that player, the goal is effectively a much bigger target. It is easier for that player to kick the ball past the goalie or defender. Also, becaue everyone is trying to stop you, your teammate in front of the goal may be relatively undefended.

Another advantage of this play is that your pass is coming toward your teammate from the general direction of the goal. Therefore, the teammate does not have to stop the ball and change direction. He or she can even just let the ball bounce off his or her foot or leg in order to deflect it into the goal.

Everyone is valued regardless of age, gender, or level of skill or fitness.

Monday, August 5, 3-5 p.m. at Howard Park at the corner of St. Louis and Jefferson Blvds in South Bend.

Best,

Tom Borek
