[homeschoolhub] Soccer - Not this week.12/31, Mon.

Last week was another terrific game. It was good hard competition the whole time. Lots of smiles too.

This week we've got some mild sickness in our house (and the weather is a bit brisk).
We can't manage "Indoor Game Day" either.

Looking forward to our next game!

Regards,

Tom

[homeschoolhub] Not Soccer – Debate

I've been debating since 1968 when I joined my high school debate team. I continued in college, at the New York University School of law, and later for 24 years in half a dozen federal and state courts. It's a skill that is not often taught. People generally struggle to develop the skills on their own. I can teach it.

I'll be teaching a 10-week course in Speech & Debate for 10 weeks this semester. Each student will have a chance to give at least 9 speeches, which will be primarily oral arguments. Every student will have different needs. My instruction will be individualized.

The progression will be as follows:

1. Speaking with little or reduced fear;
2. Speaking with appropriate volume and inflection;
3. Speaking from an outline with eye contact;
4. Organizing an oral argument;
5. Using quotations and facts;
6. Responding to an argument extemporaneously;
7. Practicing for fluency.

$20 per week ($10 per week if taken with "Pre-College Writing")

Let me know if you'd like to join us.

[homeschoolhub] Not Soccer, Not Mon. 12/31/2012

For many years, when not playing soccer with the kids, I've been teaching my own offspring, and high school and college students from other families. I find that many students, even homeschooled students, are unprepared to write their first college papers.

I will remedy this problem for a few high schoolers this semester by teaching a class in "Pre-College Writing."

Through a mixture of one-on-one feedback and group teaching experiences, over a 10-week period, each student will either be fully prepared for his or her first college paper or will make great progress toward that preparation. I will give weekly writing assignments, analyze/evaluate each assignment in detail, and teach whatever the student needs. Assignments will be individualized as well.

The progression is as follows:

1. Writing with appropriate grammar;
2. Writing in a formal voice;
3. Writing with improved organization and style;
4. Writing persuasively;
5. Researching;
6. Citing authority; and
7. Managing a very large research paper.

Each assignment will be manageable without tears, without excessive parental involvement, and without all-nighters.

$20 per week

(Ask me about my qualifications.)

Let me know if you'd like to join us. (Virtual participation via Skype is an option as well.)

Tom Borek

[homeschoolhub] Soccer in the Alternative, Mon. 12/24, 3-5 p.m.

Last week's game was another bi-stater with with hoosiers lining up with a gaggle of mitten-staters for a truly great time. As for the ski mask. . . It did not put in an appearance. Maybe this time!

They tell me (knowing that I've become a bit foggy about calendar details) that tomorrow is the eve of Christmas. Years ago, it was my day for last-minute shopping. Before that it was a day for decorating and perhaps gathering with family and friends to eat enormous quantities of food.

Now I can no longer manage the enormous quantities of food. My new post-diabetes lifestyle involves fewer calories and more crazy running and kicking. Join us?

Everyone is welcome without regard to skill, age or level of fitness. Everyone will be treated well.

Monday, December 24, 2012, from 3-5 p.m. at Howard Park at the corner of St. Louis Blvd. and Jefferson Blvd. in South Bend.

[homeschoolhub] Soccer in a Ski Mask, 12/17, Mon. 3-5 pm

Last week's game was cancelled due to cold, wet snow. This week the temperature is likely to be over 40 degrees (well . . . 41) and we have only a 20% chance of precipitation.

That amounts to an 80% chance of another highly competitive, exciting, vigorous, heart-pounding! game!

Will I wear my ski mask over glasses and beard? I didn't last week, but . . .

Everyone is welcome without regard to skill, age or level of fitness. Everyone
will be treated well.

[homeschoolhub] Soccer in the S. . . Mon. 12/10, 3-5 p.m. cancelled

That snow is wet!!! and cold!!!! Who knew?

Also, I've discovered that some of our regulars will not be coming.

'Tis, reluctantly, cancelled for this week.

For next week: 1) Hope springs eternal, and
2) There's been some talk about an inside game day.

Best,

Tom Borek

[homeschoolhub] Soccer in the S. . . Mon. 12/10, 3-5 p.m.

Last week we had unseasonably warm temperatures and a highly competitive (exciting, vigorous, heart-pounding!) game.

This week we have a 60% chance of playing amidst a myriad of uniquely shaped crystals. Yes! A little more effort to accelerate - a bit more time to stop - a delightful winter variation on the classic game.

Will I wear my ski mask over glasses and beard? Be there and find out.

Diane Day has much used curriculum to give away for free.  A homeschool mom she knows moved and liquidated everything in her inventory that was below her children's grade levels.

All material is 7th grade and down and 90% aBeka.

If you would like to go through this material, call or text Diane to set up a time. Her time is limited so contact her today.

[homeschoolhub] Soccer in December, 12/3, 3-5 p.m.

Last week, we tried to "do it again" and we succeeded! We had a delightful afternoon full of honest exertion, fellowship and even joy.

Today we will have unseasonably warm temperatures and only a 20% chance of rain. I have every reason to believe that our ranks will be swelled by the return of the H family. Wow! Who would have thought that we would be expecting so much temperate fun during the first week in December!

Everyone is welcome without regard to skill, age or level of fitness. Everyone will be treated well.

[homeschoolhub] File - Important Info

This post will go out each month as a reminder. Just delete it once you have it memorized. :-)

First, you can access the website at hshub.org. It is FULL of info on local groups, homeschooling, contests, scholarships, how to make your own free/nearly free individualized curriculum, fun youtube videos, etc. If you haven't been there in a while, check it out! New homeschoolers might especially find this article useful: http://hshub.org/New_to_Homeschooling_.html

Second, if you haven't signed up for the weekly email newsletter, YOU ARE MISSING OUT! It is full of events, field trips, activities, scholarships, volunteer opportunities, etc. for families. To sign up, go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HUBnewsletter/ OR send an email to the following address: HUBnewsletter-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

Third, the Homeschool HUB is a volunteer organization. We need local homeschool support to continue to function. Please consider helping out. You can serve on the board, teach a class, organize a play group, organize a field trip, teach a one-night workshop (on anything--cooking pizza, using Prezi or MS Word, painting, martial arts, dog breeds, Chinese culture...), throw a party, host a Shakespeare club, give a talk, or anything else you can think of. If you're interested in something, chances are another homeschooler will be, too.

Thank you!

[homeschoolhub] Soccer Putty, Mon. 11/26, 3-5 p.m.

Last week, against all odds, we had a balmy day (no ski masks neccessary!) and a great group of really competitive players. There was passing, there was running, and there was shooting! Even little A showed up!

The best part was when one team worked just a bit harder than the other and the extra effort paid off. It's great to stretch outselves, to run a bit more than expected, to concentrate a bit more, and to find a new move or a new tactic that works.

Now, with Thanksgiving behind us and Christmas ahead, let us go again! Whatever changes we undergo, expect improvement! Strive for it!

Last week we faced a 20% chance of snow or freezing rain. We ended up with a cool, dry, partly cloudy day and an extremely competitive game.

One player showed up in shorts a ski mask. Go figure!

Today should be slightly warmer, but who knows? Ya gotta be there!

Monday, November 19, 2012, from 3-5 p.m. at Howard Park at the corner of St. Louis Blvd. and Jefferson Blvd. in South Bend.

Ski masks are optional.

[homeschoolhub] Soccer on Ice! Mon. 11/12, 3-5 p.m.

Last week I wondered whether we could have another great game with our regulars, and whether we might be joined by a brand new player -
bursting with youthful potential, and ready to learn a little in a supportive environment. Well.. . we had a great game with our regulars and two new players!

How about this week? We may have a little snow on the ground. We will have cold temperatures. Will that stop us? Will I break down and wear my long pants? I don't think so. I may be wearing a ski mask and and three sweaters, but expect to see the same knees you've come to expect every Monday afternoon.

Everyone is welcome without regard to skill, age or level of fitness. Everyone will be treated well.
