[homeschoolhub] Re:

Hi,

I started another reply and I think I lost it (or this will be duplicate)

SW MI is great for homeschoolers because there are so many of us :)

In addition to what has already been mentioned there are several homeschool co-ops in the area.

The closer you get to St Joseph the easier it is to take advantage of all it has to offer.  Summer is awesome with many free and family friendly activities, brown bag lunch concerts, the fountain, beaches, festivals almost weekly in the summer and others all year through, great library programs in St Joseph and Lincoln Township.     Krasl, Box Factory, Sarett and Love Creek Nature Centers, offer home school classes and after school classes, and of course Curious Kids and Discovery Museums are fun to visit.

Welcome to the area!

Re: [homeschoolhub]

Julie,

I recommend you settle in MI.  St. Joseph along the lakeshore is nice.  I live in Dowagiac, which is a nice small town with little festivals throughout the year, some parks, a couple nature preserves, a community college, a small downtown of shops and restaurants, a nice little library, etc.  Housing tends to be a little more affordable than in some of the surrounding places.  We love it here.

Niles/Buchanan is a nice area, too--it's near Fernwood, a large nature center/pubic gardens place that has summer daycamps for kids--I attended them when I was a kid, and my older son did also.

Curious Kids museum in St. Joe (St. Joseph), Potawatomi Zoo in South Bend, Fernwood near Buchanan, art museums in Kalamazoo and South Bend, a larger zoo in Battle Creek, Love Creek Nature Center, the beaches along the lakeshore, lots of lakes and woods for caning, walking, fishing, camping, etc., lots of stuff to do in Chicago...there's lots of stuff to do around the area.

The two Partnerships are great--Berrien Springs and Niles.  Definitely a good thing to get involved with.  My son (16) takes college classes in Dowagiac, participates in an orchestra ensemble in Niles, and attends Boy Scouts in Berrien Springs.  My little guy (4) goes to story time at the library in Dowagiac and Niles, and attends monthly programs at Berrien Springs library.  We have had memberships to Fernwood, Potawatomi Zoo (current) and Curious Kids Museum.

Hi Julie,

The Niles and Berrien Springs Partnerships are a real blessing for area homeschoolers. When your kids get to high school age they can get dual enrollment college classes paid for through the Partnerships too. The first two years of college can be done for free that way.

Silver beach in St. Joe is a favorite spot for our family. Exploring the art galleries in Saugatuck is fun too. The plays at the Mendel Center at Lake Michigan College in Benton Harbor are high quality. They have a series for kids each year that we always enjoyed.

My kids are grown now, but we homeschooled for 20 years. There's lots to do in this area. It's the fruit belt....pick blueberries, raspberries, apples, peaches, etc. and make jam, freeze for smoothies, and of course, eat a ton while picking. The Chicago museums are a great day trip. In winter there is snow boarding and skiing to learn.

I believe LMC is adding a Fab Lab to it's Benton Harbor campus too. I don't know when it will open, but when it does, classes there will be great for all age kids.

[homeschoolhub] Re: activities and programs available to you in Saint Joe, Covert area.

Julie. welcome to the area! My husband and I moved here from Philadelphia,PA not too long ago and we live in Saint Joseph, MI.  We have seven children ranging in ages from 2 yo to 15 yo.

Please feel free to contact me, I'd love to answer your questions and share with you activities and programs available to you which do not involve enrolling with a local school district. The homeschooling liberties in Michigan are such a wonderful attribute to appreciate.

Re: [homeschoolhub]

The reason I ask is that in Michigan you can tap into the local school districts for non-core classes.  Berrien Springs and Niles has taken that up a notch and created programs geared just to homeschoolers called Partnerships. You have to be Michigan resident to participate.  It doesn't matter what town in Michigan you are in to participate in either partnership.  What this means is that if you want to take classes at the YMCA, art lessons or private music lessons, etc, these partnerships can pay for them.  I am the director for the Niles Partnership and Sharon Haynes is the director for the Berrien Springs Partnership.   My website is currently being updated with Fall classes, but I do have a few resources up.  Sharon's program is pretty identical to mine and shows a lot of classes we both tap into.  My website should be all up and ready for registration by July 1st.  I believe Sharon will have hers updated by then too.  The Perimeters for both programs are on their websites.

Here is the link to mine.

Michigan has implemented a new seatwaiver that will apply to grades k-5 so as soon as we get ours approved I will be changing our website to reflect that option.  If you look at Seatwaiver guidelines, you will be able to see what that will look like for K-5 grades too.

If you have any questions just let me know.

Registration is now open for generic semesters for
the 2016-17 school year and beyond at our very deepest
discount. Because the discount is so deep (85%), we will
limit the number of these available. It's on a first-come,
first-served basis.

$58 generic semesters!

We receive hundreds of email messages throughout the
year asking when we'll be opening our "year in advance"
generic online class registration... the one with the
huge discounts. It's here!

Our deepest generic semester early registration discounts
open approximately 1 year before specific class
registrations begin. Now is that time for the 2016-17
school year.

- 85% Discount With Registration for 50 Generic Semesters

$390 minus 85% = $58 in a package of 50.

Ends March 3 or sooner if they fill.

Buy for Your Just Family or Share with Friends

Share a package of 50 generic semesters with homeschooling
friends or use them all for your family. They never expire.

This deepest discount (85%) is only available with a
quantity of 50 generic semesters... and only for a limited
time.

That means a full year (two semester) class... math
English, history, science etc. would only be $116 ($58 per
generic semester) for the 2016-17 school year!

So many people tell us, "I wish I had known about
Landry Academy and the big discounts sooner." Please
forward this message to your homeschooling friends
and your homeschool group. Help us spread the word and

take advantage of huge early registration discounts
and you can wait until later to redeem your generics
and register for specific online classes.

These generic semesters can be used for Summer 2016,
Fall 2016, Spring 2017, and beyond - they never
expire.

-- Here's How it Works..

Purchase 50 generic semesters for $58 each!

NOTE: To get the huge discount you can also share
a package of generics with other homeschooling friends
or with families in your homeschool support group. One
person would need to organize and actually make the
purchase online. The generics could then be split and
directed to other people by emailing our enrollment team
with their names and contact information.

For example...

If you would like to take advantage of the 85% discount
but don't want 50 generics for your family, you can get other
homeschooling families to share 50 generics with you.

One of you purchases the 50 generics online for $2900
and then you can email our enrollment team at any time
( mailto:Enrollment@LandryAcademy.com )
with the names and email addresses of the other families,
indicating how many of the generics should go to each
family. It's that simple and you all get the huge discount.

Ends March 3 or sooner if they fill.

To Register for 50 Generic 2016-17 Semesters...

Go to our course catalog, and from the
" Select School Year" drop-down menu, select
"Generic Class Semesters Summer 2016 & Beyond"
