[homeschoolhub] Tuesday Soccer, 11/1, 3-5 p.m.

Monday soccer is cancelled due to All Hallows Eve. (Boo!)

But dry your eyes my little soccerphiles, this week we can play on Tuesday!! (Yay!)

It will be much like Monday soccer - only without the Monday. Same rules, same park, same old friends with the same chance of new ones.

So, if you're like me and feeling a little lost and a little sad about missing Monday soccer this week, just go to sleep with your soccer sox under your pillow and wake up to soccer an an entirely different day!

Everyone is welcome regardless of age, or level of skill or fitness.

Tues. 11/1, 3 - 5 p.m. at Howard Park at the corner of
Jefferson Blvd. and St. Louis Blvd in South Bend.

Call or write with questions.

[homeschoolhub] Re: online options for high school

We have used Pennsylvania Homeschoolers for many online AP courses. These are college-level courses, taught with various degrees of teacher interaction. They begin each year in August, and run on a tight schedule, though. I highly recommend them. One of the best is AP Economics, taught by Dr. Richman, and also the AP English courses taught by Debra Bell.

We've also used Potter's School, which provides a one-per-week live format. Again, it follows the school year, and may not be flexible enough for this student's needs.

For math, I recommend Chalkdust. This is a DVD-format course, with the option to call or e-mail the instructor as needed. We have never needed to do so. This is an option the student could use at their own pace. They are not inexpensive, but you may be able to find some of them used. And, they do resell well.

I do know of Thinkwell courses, which are also math, and some science, I believe. Have not used those myself, but they could be self-paced, I believe.

Debra Bell is also offering, in addition to her AP courses (she teaches both AP English courses, associated with PA Homeschoolers), pre-AP courses. Our daughter is taking pre-AP Physics this year, and we are very pleased with the course. There's either a taped or live lecture most weeks, and the teacher is very available for extra help, too. http://debrabell.com/online-classes/      I HIGHLY recommend the physics teacher, Mrs. Dincher.  She is using the Apologia Physics text, but adds more assignments/knowledge to make a very full, rich course. She is a very quick grader, so there is quick feedback to the student. You might enter a conversation with her as to how flexible her course could be.

We also use Lukeion classes for Latin and for Ancient History. These are live courses, meeting once per week at a set time. The courses run by the semester, but what might also work for your particular student are some of the workshops they offer, which are 4-week mini-courses.  Lukeion.org

Apologia offers great DVD's or teacher directed science classes.  Red Wagon Tutorials is another source.

I have some experience with math and science courses offered by Indiana University South Bend. Those courses seem to be challenging and thorough, but most of the learning comes from reading books or on-line materials. The teacher is available only to respond to written questions.

What other options are out there?

[homeschoolhub] 100% Chance of Soccer! Mon. 10/24, 3-5 p.m.

Last week we had perfect weather on the field but things were a bit chilly on the sidelines. (Perhaps that's why I counted at least 2 moms and one dad out on the field working up some warmth.)

Tonight we are likely to have some rain and tomorrow may seem more like a blustery Fall than a balmy Spring, but it will all be alright because the forecast calls for 100% chance of soccer!

G1) Help with Contrail Effects Study

Hello,

My name is Rachel Long. I am a seventh-grade student at Flagstaff Academy in Longmont, Colorado. For the 2011-12 STEM Fair (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics), I will be conducting a  study on the contrail effect.  I will be collecting data from all over the United States, and will need some volunteers to assist. All the volunteers have to do is take a picture of the sky at the exact same time and place every weekday from November 1st through November 30th at 12:00 P.M. Central Standard Time.

As a former home-schooled student, I recognize that home-schooled students are in the best position to assist with taking a picture during the day and would greatly appreciate their assistance.  If students are interested, please email rlong@fsastudents.org. I hope to recruit volunteers by October 18, 2011.

I appreciate your time and consideration and thank you for sharing this with your students.

5) Volunteer Opportunities

1) Help Plan Robotics Event in Niles

The FRC robotics event planning committee is forming now for the March event. (Did anyone come see the competition last year at Niles High school? It was all over the news!)

Anyone interested can come to LMC-Bertrand Crossing at 4:30 October 20th, and ask for Nathan Chupp. If this first meeting is too soon, you can also email me at slhollister@gmail.com to be put on the contact list for future meeting notices.

The event is a blast! Organizing it isn't too bad, if we have enough people to share the load. Ideally, sub-committee heads would only need to meet monthly, and can usually call in even for those meetings.

Come support science and engineering in a cool, competitive event!

Laura Hollister

FREE ONLINE MATH LESSONS AND ONLINE MATH TUTORING SALE

www.MasterMath.info offers a free Middle School Math curriculum, with over 100 sequential lessons on the concepts needed to prepare a student for high school math. Each lesson includes a fun, 10 – 15 minute video lesson covering that lesson's concepts, and allowing the student to "You Try It". The video lessons are accompanied by a Worksheet to print and practice the concepts taught in the lesson, plus a self-grading on-line quiz, which show how to correctly do any problem the student misses on the quiz. All this material is free!

MasterMath also offers you a way to take your student to the next level. Adding some private tutoring to the free lessons will allow me to either remediate, if the student hasn't mastered the concepts, or push the student further, if she "gets it". I personally conduct all of the tutoring sessions.

These one hour lessons are conducted over GoToMeeting, a safe, secure virtual meeting website. The student sees me and my computer screen, hears me, and can solve problems I put on my screen. I can hear the student, and see his computer screen. All you need is an internet connection, and a microphone on your computer (or a telephone). It's a Virtual Classroom experience!

The normal price for tutoring is $35 for one session, $105 for 4 sessions, or $175 for 8 sessions. BUT, for any sessions purchased before October 12, 2011, I'll double your credits! Purchase a lesson for $35, I'll give you two lessons. Purchase 8 lessons for $175, I'll give you 16 lessons! That's less than $11 per hour!

You can use these lessons whenever you need them. There is no need to schedule them all at once. Just schedule a lesson whenever you think it would be helpful.

It's the last thing that any sensitive Hobbit would want to do. The epic journey, filled with dwarfs, elves, goblins and other adventures is sure to thrill one and all. It's a show the whole family can enjoy.

4) Volunteer Opportunities

A) One day opportunity:

Day of Action for Seniors, Thursday, November 3.  Hundreds of volunteers will connect with seniors, across the area, and help them prepare for the winter by raking leaves, cleaning gutters, and weatherizing windows.  Gather a group of friends or join a group and make new friends while helping a senior to stay independent in their homes and get ready for winter.  United Way of Southwest MI is leading this effort.

B) Short term:

#1 - Consequential Minds is a drop in center for individuals with mental illness.  It is a place in Benton Harbor , near the corner of Colfax & Napier, where friends can gather, encourage each other, have food and fellowship, work on a computer, take a class, etc.  They have a pinball and arcade machine that they no longer use.  They are wondering if a volunteer could take on the task to sell it for them on eBay or another forum.

#2 - The local chapter of NAMI - National Alliance of the Mentally Ill will be holding a class - actually a 6 week series, for family members who love someone who has mental illness.  I personally took the class because a friend of mine is bipolar and I found the classes very helpful.  They would like to offer child care so there is one less barrier to having families attend.  Would you be interested in taking a night or two to assist with child care?  NAMI Basics class: Tuesday nights in Benton Harbor at the Fairplain Adventist Church for a 6 week series beginning on September 27 thru Nov. 1. The classes will run from 6 to 8:30 pm, with volunteers arriving at 5:45 and staying until 8:45 pm.

C) Long term:

#1 - Benton Harbor Street Ministries is offering a GED class for adults on Monday - Thursday mornings from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.  They are looking for volunteers willing to grade papers and/or be available to tutor.  When you help an adult learner, they in turn will encourage the children in their lives and they will do better in school.  With a GED in hand they will be better prepared to succeed in finding a job and keeping a job.

#2 - 100 Women Strong of Berrien County is looking for new Board Members who join them in supporting women in Berrien County who are striving towards self - sufficiency by offering one time grants to be used for auto repair, outstanding bills, tuition and other situations that could be barriers.   Board members play an active role in fundraising and marketing events.

For more information regarding any of these options contact the Volunteer Center .

If you would like to consider additional options, stop by one of the volunteer fairs at the Lake MI College sites - we will also be there in the evening to provide info to students who attend evening classes or if you would like to stop by after work.
