[homeschoolhub] Babysitter needed!

Hi all,

We are looking for a responsible person to occasionally watch our kids (5 and 2 1/2) and thought this would be a good group to contact.  The person can be between 14 and up and be able to help out in the mornings, afternoon, evenings both during the week and on the weekends.I'd like this to be someone who actually enjoys playing with children, yet won't leave my house a complete bomb.  It would also be ideal to have them live in closer proximity if they don't drive.  We live next to Clay Park and down the street from St Pats.

More specifically, we could really use someone for a few hours this Saturday either from 11a-3:30 or 3:30-8p.  Does anyone have a daughter or son who might be up for some extra responsibility and making a little money?

I look forward to hearing from you!

Peace,

Jen Starks

[homeschoolhub] Cool Dry Soccer, Mon., 10/29, 3-5 p.m.

Last week's forecast included a 50% chance of rain, but at game time we ended up with 98% cool, dry fun! It was great! Can we do it again?

There's no chance of rain this time, but the temperature will be a little bit cool - fine for the players but less comfortable for the spectators. Maybe one of the Mom's would like to ask about using the "clubhouse" building for cold little one's and their parents?

Everyone is welcome regardless of age, or level of skill or fitness. Everyone will be valued for their contribution. No exceptions.

Mon. 10/29, 3-5 p.m. at Howard Park at the corner of Jefferson Blvd. and St. Louis Blvd in South Bend.

Bring mittens or gloves. Dress in layers.

I don't know of any partnerships in IN.  If anyone wants to start one, go to a local superintendent and present the idea.  You may want to talk to a MI partnership for info on how it works beforehand so you have info to present to the superintendent. You may also want to check with the state board of education to see if they would fund it.

As far as dual enrollment, that is a program many states have.  You can ask local school districts if it is available there.

By 9th grade, kids are cable of self-educating, so she doesn't necessarily need to be there while her child is learning.  She can facilitate when she is home.

My son is also in 9th grade, but we don't use curriculum.  I have heard good things about the "Keys to" series ("Keys to algebra"  Keys to geometry" etc.)

Friends,

I have a friend who must find a way to homeschool her bright but under-achieving 9th grader ASAP. She faces two obstacles - very little time available when she is not working and a limited budget. The IUSB courses, for example, are too expensive.

I'm collecting options with pros and cons for each. If you've used a secondary curriculem, on-line or otherwise please let me know what is was, how expensive it was, and what you thought of it.

Please feel free to reply via e-mail or phone. If you'd prefer to speak directly to the parent, I can arrange that as well.

I realize that I presume on your generosity.

Thanks you.

[homeschoolhub] Searching for Tiger Scouts

Hello Everyone!
I wanted to send out a quick email in hopes to find anyone interested in joining Cub Scouts. My husband is the Tiger Den leader of Pack 451 and our close friend is the Cub Master. My son, who is in 1st grade, is so excited to join scouts, however we have not had any other 1st graders join. We need at least 2-3 more 1st grade boys to make a Tiger Den.
Pack 451 is a very fun and active group. We have 1 Pack meeting a month located at Christ the King Church,in South Bend. We also have 1 -2 Tiger Den meetings a month. These activities are to fulfill badge requirements and are always a lot of fun for the boys. We have not decided on a meeting location for the Tiger Den meetings as we want to make the location convenint for all the scouts. This location will be decided once we have more Tigers join.
If anyone is interested, please contact me and I will gladly send you any information you need.
Thank you,
Kelly Young

[homeschoolhub] Soccer in the (opti- or pessi-) Mist, Mon. 10/22, 3-5 p.m.

Last week we had unquantifiable but appreciable amounts of fun in the sun and the brisk air. This week we face the prospect of a 50% chance of rain. It's a test. The glass of probability is half full of rain: what's a homeschooler to do?

Shall we slump and stare, heavy-lidded out the window? Shall we avoid the pain of disappointment by sacrificing hope at the first opportunity? Or shall we say, "That glass is half-empty of rain!" There's no reason in the world why 3-5 p.m. can't be part of the dry half of the day! And what is rain anyway? Life-giving water! We bathe in it, we drink it, we cook with it, and we are in large measure made of it. To fear it or to allow it to deprive us of our weekly festival of athleticism would be to give it more power than an unspeakably common three-part molecule deserves.

So, on your way to the game this week, roll down the car windows and shout "It's half empty, and that's good enough for me!!"

Everyone is welcome regardless of age, or level of skill or fitness. Everyone will be valued for their contribution. No exceptions.

Mon. 10/22, 3-5 p.m. at Howard Park at the corner of Jefferson Blvd. and St. Louis Blvd in South Bend.

Bring a towel?

[homeschoolhub] Soccer for Joy! Mon. 10/15, 3-5 p.m.

In case you missed it, last week's game was one of our very best attended. In addition to the regulars from as far away as the "mitten state" (Hi Jen!), we had an entire squad (troop? gaggle? flotilla?) of homeschooled girl scouts (They were formidable!).

It's probably silly but it sometimes seems that more players can have a greater quantity of fun than fewer players. Imagine that 12 players each person had 6 ounces of fun. That would be a total of 72 ounces or 4 1/2 pounds of enjoyment. Imagine that we had another game with 15 players who each had an equal quantity. That would be a total of 90 ounces or 5.625 pounds of joy. The difference would be visible from orbit!

I know what you're thinking: we can't weigh fun, and we cannot measure joy. You're right! But that doesn't mean that it isn't there, and it doesn't mean that some don't have more than others. Yes, Virginia, there is Joy, and although I cannot quantify it with a great deal of precision, I can feel it, and I will feel it in great glowing gobs this week with my friends, large and small, in Howard Park!

Everyone is welcome regardless of age, or level of skill or fitness. Everyone will be valued for their contribution. No exceptions.

Mon. 10/15, 3-5 p.m. at Howard Park at the corner of Jefferson Blvd. and St. Louis Blvd in South Bend.
