[homeschoolhub] Indiana Virtual Schools

I was wondering if any of you have experience with using either Hoosier Academy or Iniana Connections Academy as your homeschool curriculum? What is the difference in the two? Please tell me your opinions on these two state offered curriculums.
Thank you,

[homeschoolhub] new homeschooling family??

Anyone know a family who is about to pull their kids out of school to
start homeschooling or who recently did this? The people making a
homeschool movie want to follow their journey. Here's the info:

Help Class Dismissed Find A Family!
We need a family!

The time has come for us to find the right family for the next step of our
film and_we need your help_.

Many of you know that over the past year we've been focusing on interviews
with individuals and families who are already homeschooling, including many
who have shared valuable knowledge and wisdom from years of experience.

But if you've read our synopsis, you'll also know that _a big part of our
film is centered upon documenting a family_ who are just starting out; a
family who are making the transition from public or private school into the
world of alternative education.

We'd like to follow their journey and we believe that documenting their
experiences will be an effective way for people in the general public to
gain a real understanding of what it means to make the commitment to
homeschool. There are a lot of preconceived notions within the general
public about what homeschooling is, who does it and for what reasons. We
hope that the average person watching the film will be able to relate to
this family and by doing so, will have many of their questions answered.
They may even be inspired to do the same thing!

So _if you know of someone who is considering pulling their kids out of
school_ to homeschool them who might be interested in being involved in our
film, please let them know about our film, or ask them if we can contact
them. Or if you have recently started homeschooling or are considering doing
so, please contact us directly by visiting our website and filling out this
form:
http://homeschoolfilm.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=bffb54707ea640971ad054f6d&id=a65b180711&e=628eec9224

Thanks, and we look forward to hearing from you.

Jeremy, Dustin, Roy and the Class Dismissed Team.

[homeschoolhub] Re: Exploring Homeschooling

Hey there, Jen!

I have read through several, although not all, of the posts. If you are up for some philosophy/theory I would also recommend you reading some John Taylor Gatto books- JT Gatto was New York city (and NY state) "Teacher of the Year"- He has come to endorse parent-led learning. His experience, knowledge and philosophy developed from years working in the ps system is fascinating. I am not promising you will agree with everything he writes but his writing will definitely help you define your own educational philosophy. You can find all his books on Amazon- I'd recommend starting with either "Dumbing Us Down..." or "The History of American Education..." (both titles are longer- can't put my finger on them at the moment.

Other good reads include John Holt, a father of 'unschooling' (even if you don't unschool you will probably find some nuggets that will help you form your own ideas) . Of course Maria Montessori books sound right up your alley and if you send me your address I will send you a copy of my own book "Stories for the Homeschool Heart"- (no charge- I have a couple extra laying around which I've set aside for young moms like you who are thinking about hsing :) ) The stories are of faith, hope and inspiration of and about homeschooling families- many moms share their stories- it's an easy read- and we're finished with our first printing so it's temporarily unavailable to buy anyway-  I agree with the other posts that say your sweet 4yo needs nothing more than lots of story time, child led activities and  YOU! :)

God bless - and hope that helps-

I can be flexible and add more time and do less days of the week, if anyone is interested!

If you have a daughter in the 11-17 year old range that loves to play, I would love to hear from you.  I need someone who will play with my daughter for an hour 3-4 days a week from 1-2pm or 2-3pm.  The only catch is that I won't be able to provide transportation.  Could be a great way for some extra money!

Thanks!

RE: [homeschoolhub] Preparing to Take the Leap

sorry we did not get to talk much yesterday, but I am glad you were able to stop by for awhile. I think if I was in your place the first thing I would do is work on the family and work schedule.  You have a great idea in finding another family with a child your daughters age that you could share time with during the day so you can work. Trust me the educational part of homeschooling is the easiest,  time and money are the biggest concerns that I have discovered.  But you will be able to do it.  You might want to start helper your daughter to learn to play and entertain herself quietly, while you do your 2 hrs. of work.  Is there anything she can help you with?

Subject: [homeschoolhub] Preparing to Take the Leap

Hey all,

I came by yesterday to my first group after I was told that my daughter will be terminated from her preschool at the end of the month.  Apparently, high spirited 4 year olds don't mix with Countryside Montessori.  Anyhow,  I appreciate all the support and encouragement from those I spoke to yesterday.  My main concern is that I won't have my 2 hours of carved out time every weekday for myself to work (I work from home, do dinner prep, projects, etc).  I already have felt like I don't have enough time to get things done.  SO, I think I may need either someone to play with my 2 children (or my 4 yo while son naps) 2-3 times a week. OR I need to find another place they can "play" without me for some of the week.

I am also looking into a loose curriculum to give me some starting point.  Has anyone used "Five in a Row"?  Any other preschool suggestions?  I'm really drawn to cultural programs.

Anyone doing a co-op preschool in this group with shared lessons and getting kids together to learn?

Looking forward to getting more involved in the group,

Jen Starks

Thanks so much for the feedback...everyone!!  We have put money into an account for the year which basically pays for her schooling and helps with tax refunds.  I wondering if anyone has claimed their home for school to receive a reimbursement like this. ( We have to use this money for child care purposes or it's gone at the end of the year.)

I was thinking that if I started homeschooling, I could still send them somewhere to "play" for a couple hours maybe 1-2 times a week.  I run a business out of my home and am trying to strategize when I'm going to "work" and not less this ride over my "educating".  Are there any centers that would be worth looking into around the area?

Hi Jen:

Just chiming in but you've already gotten some great advice. I am a mom of 4 and will tell you now that I am on kid #4 (and in my 12th year of homeschooling) I am wayyyyy more relaxed compared to my 1st (and even 2nd for that matter). I've discovered that kids need to be kids way longer than I ever realized and that play is the business for learning for them. I've discovered that learning doesn't have to look structured with desks and chairs (or even centers) for them to be learning. Often it can be big & comfy sofas and picture books. I've discovered kids are programmed to learn and if we feed this programming rather than killing it with lots of formal instruction (even when done well in a Montessori setting) that they will do better in the long run rather than looking smart and stellar in the moment. I discovered (after touring a Montessori primary classroom just this week as I have returned to work part time as was concerned as the quantity of a schoolwork we are accomplishing on a weekly basis has dropped off) that what I can offer my son on a part-time basis by continuing to homeschool him is STILL FAR SUPERIOR to what he would get full-time in a Montesorri classroom.

I would be happy to talk to you about the curriculum we follow (Ambleside Online - google it) and it's similarities to Montessori. You can do this at home! And it 's totally worth doing.

I vote with the others. Bring your previous child out of that environment and watch her bloom at home!
