Re: [homeschoolhub] Re: Exploring Homeschooling

This is really helpful.  Thanks so much for the support, suggestions, and a safe place to go.

Jen,

Bonnie said it best. "Play, read and have fun." "She's 4 not 7 or 24."

Watch Truman Capote's "A Christmas Memory" on YouTube. Be yourself and pay attention to your child.

Brick `n mortar schools are like robots. If they are programmed well, they can treat some kids well for a period of time, but when they hit an unfamiliar situation they sometimes react in an inappropriately emotional or bureaucratic way. If the Montessori robot is telling you that your daughter "does not compute . . . does not compute . . . does not compute" that is not a negative evaluation of your daughter. It just means that she does not react as the robot's programming predicted, and that the robot is beginning to run amuck.

I'm most worried about the fact that the robot has persuaded you to "really come down hard on her for all the negative reports at school." Four-year-olds can't learn from feedback that comes hours or days after the negative behavior. (The Montessori teachers were all taught that.)

To teach a 4-year-old to stay away from the furnace, you must stop her from moving toward the furnace immediately and repeatedly.

To teach a 4-year-old to sit still while you read, you bring her attention back to the book when it wanders. You do that repeatedly. If she won't sit still, she's not ready to read that long. Let her up immediately so she doesn't see the reading chair as a prison.

Sorry. I'm being redundant. It won't happen again.

Whoops! I lied.

Good luck. I have no doubt that you will do a wonderful job raising your wonderful child.
